The Role of Typography in Web Design

By Diversity Technologies. , 2 min read

Around 90 percent of what people see on a typical website is text. That makes typography one of the most important design decisions you will make, even though most visitors never notice it consciously. They only notice when it is wrong.

Readability comes first

Body text should be large enough to read on a phone without zooming, usually 16 pixels or more. Lines should be comfortable to follow, between 50 and 75 characters wide on desktop. Line spacing of about 1.5 times the font size gives text room to breathe. These are not style preferences; they decide whether people read your content or leave.

Fonts communicate personality

A law firm, a fashion brand and a fintech startup should not look the same. Geometric sans-serif fonts often feel modern and technical. Serif fonts can suggest tradition and authority. Rounded fonts feel friendly. Choose a typeface that matches how you want customers to feel about your business, then use it consistently.

Limit the number of fonts

One or two font families are enough for almost every website. Use weight and size to create variety instead of adding more typefaces. Each extra font also adds download time, which matters for visitors on mobile data.

Build a clear hierarchy

Headings, subheadings and body text should be clearly different in size and weight so visitors can scan the page. A reader should understand the structure of a page from the headings alone. If everything is bold, nothing stands out.

Contrast and accessibility

Light grey text on a white background might look elegant in a design file, but it is hard to read in sunlight on a phone screen. Aim for strong contrast between text and background. It helps everyone, including older visitors and people with visual impairments.

Performance

Web fonts should be loaded efficiently, ideally self-hosted and subset to the characters you need. A good setup shows readable text immediately while the custom font loads.

The takeaway

Good typography is invisible. Visitors simply find your site easy to read and trust what it says. That is exactly the result you want.
