Cloud Migration for Nigerian Businesses: Moving Beyond cPanel
By Diversity Technologies. , 2 min read
For years, shared cPanel hosting was the default choice for Nigerian business websites. It was affordable and familiar. Today, many businesses are discovering that the same budget, or less, buys a much faster and more secure setup in the cloud.
The problems with shared hosting
On shared hosting, your website sits on a server with hundreds of others. When a neighbouring site gets busy or hacked, yours can slow down or be affected too. Servers are often located far from your customers, which adds delay to every page load. Security updates depend on your host, and older WordPress installations are a common target for malware and spam link injection.
What the cloud offers instead
Platforms like Cloudflare serve your website from data centres close to your visitors, including locations in Lagos. Static pages load almost instantly, and dynamic features run on serverless functions that scale automatically. Cloudflare Pages, Workers, R2 storage and D1 databases have generous free tiers that cover most small business websites.
Security by default
Cloud platforms include free SSL, DDoS protection and a web application firewall. There is no exposed cPanel login or outdated plugin to exploit, and deployments are versioned, so you can roll back a bad change in seconds.
A safe migration plan
- Audit your current site, pages, email accounts and DNS records.
- Rebuild or export the website on the new platform and test it on a temporary address.
- Move DNS to Cloudflare while keeping mail records pointed at your existing email server.
- Set up redirects from every old URL to its new location so you keep your Google rankings.
- Switch over and monitor traffic, forms and email for the first two weeks.
What about email?
Email does not have to move at the same time as your website. You can keep your existing cPanel mailboxes by leaving your MX records unchanged, then move email later to Google Workspace, Zoho or Microsoft 365 when it suits you.
Is it right for you?
If your website is slow, has been hacked, or your hosting renewal is coming up, it is a good time to consider the move. The migration is a one-time project, and the savings and speed improvements continue every month after.
