How to Choose the Right Colours for Your Website

By Diversity Technologies. , 2 min read

Colour is one of the first things visitors notice about a website, and it shapes how they feel about your business within seconds. Choosing colours is not about personal taste. It is about guiding attention and building recognition.

Start from your brand

If your business already has a logo, your website palette should grow from it. Pick one primary colour that represents the brand. At D-TECH that is our deep blue. Then choose one accent colour for actions such as buttons and links. Ours is orange.

Use the 60-30-10 rule

A simple way to balance a palette: about 60 percent of the page uses a neutral base colour, 30 percent uses your primary colour, and 10 percent uses your accent. Neutrals like white, light grey or charcoal give content space. The accent should be rare so it stands out when it appears.

Reserve one colour for action

Your call-to-action buttons should use a colour that appears almost nowhere else on the page. When visitors learn that orange means "click here", they find your Request a Quote button without thinking.

Think about meaning

Colours carry associations. Blue often signals trust and stability, which is why banks use it. Green suggests growth and health. Red creates urgency but can also signal errors. Consider what your customers expect in your industry, then decide whether to follow or deliberately break that expectation.

Check contrast

Every text and background combination must be readable. Free tools such as the WebAIM contrast checker tell you whether your colours meet accessibility guidelines. Pay special attention to text placed on top of images and coloured buttons.

Test on real screens

Colours look different on a calibrated monitor, a budget Android phone and a laptop in bright sunlight. Preview your palette on the devices your customers actually use before you commit.

Keep it consistent

Once you choose your palette, document it with exact colour codes and use it everywhere: website, social media, invoices and signage. Consistency is what turns colours into a brand.
