A Beginner's Guide to Web Design

By Diversity Technologies. , 2 min read

If you are planning your first business website, the number of decisions can feel overwhelming. Colours, fonts, pages, hosting, plugins. This guide covers the fundamentals so you can have a confident conversation with any designer, including us.

Start with the goal, not the look

Every page on your website should have one job. Your home page introduces the business and points people to the right place. A service page explains one offer and asks for an enquiry. A contact page makes it easy to reach you. When a page tries to do everything, visitors do nothing. Before you think about design, write down what you want a visitor to do after reading each page.

Structure: the pages you actually need

Most small and medium businesses in Nigeria need five to eight pages: Home, About, Services (or one page per service), Portfolio or Case Studies, Blog, and Contact. Add a Request a Quote page if you sell custom work. Resist the urge to add pages just because a competitor has them.

Layout and visual hierarchy

Visitors scan before they read. Use one clear headline per page, short paragraphs, and headings that describe what follows. The most important action, such as calling you or requesting a quote, should be visible without scrolling on both desktop and mobile.

Design for phones first

More than 80 percent of web traffic in Nigeria comes from mobile phones, often on limited data. That means compressed images, readable text without zooming, and buttons large enough to tap with a thumb. If your site only looks good on a laptop, it does not look good to most of your customers.

Speed is part of design

A beautiful page that takes eight seconds to load will lose visitors before they see it. Choose modern hosting, optimise images and avoid heavy sliders. Tools like Google PageSpeed Insights will show you where time is being lost.

Content you can update

Your website should not need a developer every time your prices change. A good content management system lets your team edit text, add blog posts and upload images safely.

Next steps

Write down your goals, list the pages you need and collect examples of sites you like. Then talk to a designer who asks about your business before showing you templates. That conversation is where every good website starts.
